Experimenting with HDR

We're playing around the HDR in class at the moment, so today I took some photos and them put them together in photoshop and... here's the result!

I've never been particularly interested in HDR, but I think that it has quite a good use when it comes to buildings and stuff (photographically, that is) so... I look forward to experimenting with it a bit more! (It makes taking photos of the harbour bridge actually a bit exciting for once).

Sending lots of love out to Bella and Georgie and all their friends and family today :)

Product photography: Eco Store Body Lotion

In class at the moment we're doing still life photography in a... productey way. Aka... we're doing product photography. And today's task was for each of us to take a high key product shot. I brought along this Eco Store Body Lotion that I haven't used yet, but I'm sure it'll be good. Because it's nice to nature :p

Photographer of the week: Cat Lane

Hi everyone! So... it's kind of more like photographer of the month but i plan on it being photographer of the week so... I'll just keep it named that. So! This feature is profile photographers who's work I love. As part of college I've been encouraged to look at as many people's work as I can and I absolutely love doing it! And if you love photography too... you might just love this feature!

So, this week we're featuring a photographer I've been following for a while, I absolutely love her work, the colours are amazing, the models, the locations, the light, the dreaminess - it's all so beautiful!!!

Cat Lane

Age: 20
Location: Bedford, UK

Tell us a little about yourself:
I'm a freelance fashion, portrait and editorial photographer and hopefully future crazy pug lady!

How would you describe your style of photography:
I've always, always found this a hard one to answer, but someone described it long ago as "heavily stylised portraiture" and I still think it fits quite well.

When did you first take that photo that made you realise you might actually want to be a photographer:
I don't think there really is a particular photo - I just realised over time that I felt too strongly about this to ever want to do anything else.

How did you first get into photography? Have you studied, or are you self taught?
At the end of my school years, I spent a huge amount of time off school because I was very ill. I think the resultant boredom is what inspired me to pick up a camera, and it just went from there. I was self taught for a number of years before studying a year-long practical photography course - I think it got to a point where I needed to learn how to use equipment I'd not have access to otherwise and also learn about the business side of things too.

What is one of your favourite photos you've taken, and why?
It changes all the time, but right now probably this one...

Portraits of friends are always my favourites and the colour in this just really, really appeals to me at the moment.

What is your favourite photo you've taken in the past month or two?
This one I think...

it's from my favourite shoot yet and it felt like everything came together so well to create a set of photos that really matched the look and feel I saw in my head.

What's your favourite lens?
I've just acquired a new one so I'm a bit torn, but it's definitely between the Canon 50mm f/1.4 and 135mm f/2L. Prime lenses will always be my favourite!

What do you always have with you on a photo shoot other than your camera?
Bin-bags. It sounds ridiculous but they're absolutely invaluable to me, I always get my models to sit on them so the clothes don't get dirty! Ikea bags are starting to become pretty invaluable also, they hold so much stuff!

Before a photo shoot what (if anything) do you prepare?
Styling, make up mood board, call sheets, charged batteries, empty cards, ideas in my head!

Do you have a 'shot list' you plan out before a shoot or do you just kind of.. go with the flow?
I never have a list of shots per se, but I always seem to have a picture in my head of how the look and feel of the shoot should come out. So I suppose I do "go with the flow" in a sense, but I always know how I want the pictures to feel as a set if that makes sense!

What's inspiring you at the moment?
The changing of the seasons and new autumn winter collections and look books. I love the way the seasons transform locations and the feel of my images, it's wonderful.

Any tips for other photographers or aspiring photographers?
It's easier said than done but always have faith in yourself and never, ever stop working towards what you want to achieve. The best advice I ever came across was to "do a shoot that scares you". It's one of the truest things I've ever read - every time I do a shoot that scares me I know I'm pushing myself and improving my work for the better.

Any additional comments?
Thank you ever so much for the feature!

So make sure you check Cat out here!

Home: Anika

Here's another from my Home series, featuring the lovely Anika and her beautiful bedroom! I fell in love with this bedroom, as you walked in there is some soft music playing in the background, the whole room was so bright an airy with a huge window, and you could hear the soft sound of the ocean nearby. And not to mention the day beds everywhere!

And also, RIP Steve Jobs - thanks for helping make every computer I've ever owned (or that my dad has owned)! Including... the Macintosh, the Quadra, the first iMac, eMac, iPod video, and Macbook Pro!
