Look! I drew a thing!

I don't know if anyone is vaguely interested by theses drawings, but I drew this bicycle for a  letter set and I'm quite proud of myself. Haha! Everyone  is probably thinking. Wow. It's a bike. But it makes me smile.
In other news, I had a failed attempt to take an outfit shot today. I wasn't wearing anything particularly inspiring at work, so I thought I would go home and chuck something better on. It's getting dark really early here so I had about 30 minutes before all light was completely gone. I rushed home but by the time I got to my doorstep the sun had pretty much disappeared and the shot I had in mind just would have been a waste of time. Seems I'm going to have to dress excitingly to work and take outfit shots in my lunch break through the winter if I want to do more than just one shot per week.
Ah well, Sunday perhaps.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Blog feature winner!

Hi gang! (gang?)

Well I don't know if you remember my 'giveaway' I was holding, where the prize would be me writing a little feature on a follower of mine! Well anyway, the winner is... Wilbs of a nut in a me shell!

(Well done, Wilbs, on being the only eligible entrant! :))

I've been reading a nut in a me shell for only about a week now but I'm hooked! It's full of loads of fun little posts that seem to just make sense to me and have a personal side too.
I also find that she is hilarious without even trying.

One of my favourite regular posts is titled 'a cat a day keeps the crazy at bay' (see below) which does the job of giving me a laugh every morning.

Another thing I really enjoy about a nut in a me shell is that unlike myself, her blog writing is not a messy mess of ramblings like my own, but she is actually a really good writer and it comes out in every post she publishes. This is probably because she's a university creative writing major, or maybe she's just naturally talented.

Wilbs sometimes uses two tea bags, sometimes washes her face with bodywash and has a darling blog-layout!

You should check out her blog if you're interested in a real-life blog of an Australian uni student!

Jump!

A lot of portrait photographers out there will agree with me that when it comes to getting a fun photo, you usually end up telling the subject to 'jump'.

Or is that just me?

Anyway, due to this and several years of taking photos, I've taken a lot of jumping pictures. In fact, just to brag for a minute, I pride myself on being able to almost always get the good bit of the jump when I'm taking a jumping photo on any camera.

Three or four years ago I did some research on this photography project by Phillip Hausman where he made a book of celebrities jumping. I think it was because at the end of every one of his photoshoots he would ask people to jump for him. He called it 'jumpology'.

This is one of Salvador Dali that I love because it's just like... whaaaaat?

So I thought I would share with you some of my 'jumpology'!

I know when I first started taking jumping photos about 6 years ago with my friends in a park near school we loved it. We also noticed that half the people would sometimes pull some very... interesting faces while they were jumping. I also noticed that most people have their own type of... jump, that you wouldn't normally notice unless it was captured like it is. Some people do the 'Toyota' jump, some people put their arms down, arms out, legs tucked, legs sprawled, oh the list goes on.

(Some of these are nice arty shots but most are just... jumping.)

I'd love to see some of your jumping shots!

The Letter Appreciation Society

I was reading a blog post by Maria from Lulu Letty, when I clicked on a link she had posted to one of her sponsors, Poppy Cork Hill. Other than having some really beautiful handmade and vintage items on this shop, Tonia, the shop owner has a little thing she calls 'The Letter Appreciation Society'.
This is her scheme to bring back the golden days of letter writing. Not just communication with someone by text, but taking care, thinking about what you write and having it in your own hand writing!

So, I am joining this society and will soon write a letter to someone, with care taken in doing so! I actually wrote a letter to Zoe last week but it was just my mind ramblings. So I'll do better this time.

The Letter Appreciation Society Pledge

I pledge to send 1 letter or card to a friend, relative, aquaintence or place where I got really good service, a month.
I pledge that this letter or card shall be handwritten by me.
I pledge that I shall spend more than 2 minutes thinking about it before doing it.

And I urge you to join up too! Just go to her site and click on the 'Letter Appreciation Society' for all the information!

It's been a while, Illustrator

Goodmorning everyone!

Well I've been quite computer obsessed for the past two days, on Illustrator drawing pictures that may possibly go on some of these letter sets!
I'm not quite sure if they're good enough, they definitely have a very... 'basic Illustrator brush' feel to them, which I don't mind but people might not be very excited by them. Anyway, it's still in the process and I might have to try out a few different brushes, but here's a little one a drew up.

You know how people have doodles that they draw all the time? Well this is one of mine. I tend to draw leafy things when I'm bored, haha!

I'm also working on some silhoutte type things, and some pretty trees, etc. So we'll see how it goes, I'll keep you posted!

And I'll take some actual photos soon, I promise!

People: Rosemary

This is Rosemary.

Rosemary is one of my best friends, I've known her since primary school. I don't really remember much of her from primary school except that I used to call her 'Rosie' and think that I was really smart for doing it, and that she got 100% in the state-wide English exam.
She left my primary school in Year 5 I think but we re-united in Year 7 when we started going to the same high school.
Rosemary is super-cool, has over a hundred t-shirts, a really good camera and lense and when I'm walking around with her at night in seedy situations I always know that she would probably be a good asset in the event of a bogan attack. I mean that in the best way :).

Rosemary likes triangles, scientific sketches of plants and metallic textures. She also has an incredible knowledge of things (especially memes. Don't even get her started on the memes) and also plants.

Hello Rosemary.

Etsy, betsy, puddin and pie

I’ve decided to start up an Etsy Shop! I have a bit of free time now and then and I’d love to be selling handmade/vintage things for people, so I thought... why not!?

I’ve spent the last few months absolutely Etsy-addicted and decided I might as well have a shop of my own. I love making things and although I don’t think the vintage shops around where I live would have the biggest selection, I think it could offer an alternative, for people to shop vintage that will be largely coming from country Australia.
I’m not quite sure what I’ll do when it comes to handmade, I decided yesterday that I want to do a few letter-writing sets, because I love them and I bought a beautiful set just recently and it just makes me happy. I might also sell a few prints and who knows what else!
Don’t worry though, I won’t be bombarding you with Etsy information constantly on here. I’ll write a bit as I’m preparing to open the shop but then when I do open it I’ll make the shop its own blog so you can follow it if you choose.
I don’t really plan on it being a huge source of income, maybe if I could make a tiny bit of pocket money that would be nice, but it’s mainly for the fun of it :). So I plan on it being very affordable stuff.
If any shop owners want to give me some tips then feel free to go ahead, otherwise, keep your ear out for more information!

A weekend at the beach

Hi everyone!
First off I just wanted to say a big thank you to all my commenters/followers! You guys are great and make me really, really happy all the time 
Well, I’m back from Wollongong! I had a good and very tiring trip, the days were so long (in a good way) and I et... so much. And it wasn’t even delicious food it was like fatty, evil food. Haha. I will be dancing very energetically at dancing tonight I think.
I didn’t get a chance to take any outfit posts though. The main reason would have been that in my frantic packing attempt I couldn’t think of any outfits to wear so I just chose ones that I had recently posted on my blog as outfit posts! Haha! So nothing too original was going on there.

Anywho, fun was had by all!

Or in photo form we...

Took photos

Played fully clothed in the water

Saw rainbows

Got blown around in the wind

Got really blown around in the wind

Got sandy. Or in this case, got obnoxious?

Span around in circles

and drew giant penises in the sand. (yes, that's right, whenever you see the penises drawn in the sand and assume it's teenagers - you're wrong. it's actually 20-somethings that never grew up).

Happy Tuesday!

Are you still mine?

Hello blog friends!

All of you make me so happy, and I want to give you something. But I don’t really have anything particularly amazing to give away.

Nonetheless, I thought I might give away a little feature on someone’s blog! Seeing as my last attempt at this failed, I thought I’d give it a try! And I would like to feature a less known blogger so this sounds like the perfect opportunity.
The only rules are that you have to be following my blog, and you have to just reply to this blog post. (If I get more than one entry – haha!) I’ll pick randomly and then write up a feature on your blog, and post it on my blog!
-

In other news, I’m going to Sydney today! And then Wollongong tomorrow, yippee! I won’t have a particularly fancy camera with me but I’ll try to take some pictures nonetheless.

I'm not sure if I'll get time/a computer to make any blog posts up there, we'll have to see.

I downloaded some new music for my travels, and I was wondering, what’s your favourite driving music?

Here’s a list of some of mine J I think they’re all somehow related to driving memories, not co-incidentally.
Unchained Melody – The Righteous Brothers. There’s this particular strip of highway that I drive to Sydney on and everytime I’m on there I feel like putting on this song, poking my head out of my non-existant sun room and with the wind in my hair, scream/singing ‘ohhhh, myyyy looooovvvveee, my darling, i’ve huunngeeered ffooor yooourrr touch!’ etc etc. It’s just epic.

Hitchin’ a ride – Vanity Fare. Has anyone seen that old movie Now and Then? It was like one of my favourite childhood memories, I just loved everything about it, and one day they ride their bikes to a nearby town to go to the town’s library, and one of them has a wireless in their basket and it’s playing ‘hitchin’ a ride’. Then they go for a swim in a creek and boys they know show up and start skinny dipping nearby.

I don’t know, it’s just like the epitome of summer to me.
New Slang – The Shins. I’m ashamed to say that I only recently discovered this song when it came out on Triple J’s Hottest 100 of All Time. I just love it. James Mercer’s voice is like... my favourite voice in the world. I first really listened to this song in a small country town when I was driving around these dirt road hill sides trying to get a good shot of a wind farm.

What are some of yours?

I should get going now, but until Tuesday-ish, I leave you wish this :)

Hurdy hur

I haven't really been doing much lately.
Like... nothing.
Go to work. Go home. Watch Frasier or Ally McBeal (livin' it up!). Go to sleep. Wake up. Go to work. And the hideous cycle goes on and on and on.
So I'm going to post one of my older photoshoots that I haven't posted on here before. This was taken at the end of last year.

This is Greg and Eileen. They make music. I took this as band shots for them. I don't actually know what their band is called... I don't know if it has a name. I don't know if it's a band. You can find them here.

I quite enjoy these photos.

:)

P.s.

I don't care what you say. I love LOLcats

P.p.s
I'm going to Woolloongong tomorrow!!! Wollongong isn't exciting, but my friends who live there are!

You know how I said I loved photography adventures?

Well this is the reason...

I've decided to start a weekly feature for where I put in some of the... other photos from a photo shoot I go on. The ones that never get recognised by anyone but me :)

This, for example, was taken on a photoshoot with Perrin and Rosemary. They discovered this... cage thing and of course Perrin decided to get in it, and of course Rosemary decided to pull him around. And poke him with a stick?

:)

You cross the border to my heart

"When you come and see me in California, you cross the border of my heart."
- Joanna Newsom, In California

I finally bought Joanna's new CD, Have One On Me and I'm in love. It's just so peaceful and lovely and amazing.

-

Guess what, I have 10 followers! It seems like a lot to me, but I'm sure most of you are going '10 followers. Big deal.' but I don't know, it just excites me!
I was going to do a feature on my tenth follower as a little prize thingy, but my tenth follower is my friend Caitlin who doesn't actually have a blog of her own (yet?).
So I figure I'll just take photos of Caitlin! I don't know if that's really a prize seeing as I've been bugging her to let me take photos of her for weeks. So you can consider it a punishment Caitlin. Ha ha!

On that note, a lot of friends from my... area have started following my blog. Why don't you all make blogs! I'd love to hear what you have to say... whatever that may be :)

-

How was everyone's weekend? I went to this 'young person' event at the skate park on Saturday to take some photos, I won't upload those because they're not all that good. But afterwards I went and took some pictures of what I was wearing :)

Dress: Dotti, $60
Tights: The supermarket?
Shoes: Steve Madden, $50
Necklace: Handmade, a gift from Baja Design

I used three different techniques to take these shots, which I thought I'd tell you about.

My tripod is currently without an... attachey bit so I have to precariously perch my camera on top of the tripod. Kind of useless, but the point I'm trying to make is that I can't take portrait shots at the moment because the camera doesn't... perch like that. So just take that into consideration.

I've never really used auto focus on my Canon EOS 40D before, so I thought I would give it a try. I have a wireless remote control (which you can probably see in the photos) and I assumed the camera would probably be able to decide to focus on me instead of the tree next to me.
This was assumption, because the camera instead chose to focus on whatever it wanted, changing where it focused for every photo!
However, my favourite photo, the first one where I'm near the tree, was taken with the camera on auto focus so I suppose it kind of worked!

After this failed I tried to put my camera on the right point focus and just take all the shots trying to align myself with where I assumed the right point of focus was.
This was also a failure, as it seems I'm really not good at aligning myself with focal points from a distance.

The last method I used is simpley setting the camera on middle point focus, taking it off my tripod, and walking to the point where I wanted to stand in the photo. I marked a spot in the dirt and focused on my tripod. Then without taking my finger off the half focus I switched the lens over to manual focus and then put the camera on the tripod and walked back to the spot I had marked in the dirt.
This one worked the best as just about every photo I took was in focus, and as long as I stayed on that same line of focus it was fine! Some of the photos were just a tiny bit soft, but that was because I had it on f1.8 so it was kind of almost impossible to get an exactly right focus on my eyes.
I think I learnt that trick from this blog, The Wanderlusters.

-

I think it should also be noted that

1. I should probably park my car where it won't be seen in the photo.

2. I'm gonna be honest with you. When I'm alone I like to dance. Not just like head bopping, like, I like to think I'm some sort of amazing ballerina. It hurts when I realise I'm not actually as skilled as I think I am (see below).

Photos with birds

These are the reasons why I like photoshoots.

Good photos. Obviously.

Fences with the sun behind them.

Sun in general

Locations

Strange watch dogs that don't even bark. They just... watch.

Bug attacks. (I don't really like bug attacks. But this had to be mentioned. Look at the bloooood.)

People giving me the evil eye.

Forest times. Minus possible forest villains.

Being one with nature. Ommmm.

Extreme model-ness.

Man poses.

Awkward field moments.

Also, this is Vinnie.

Want me to take your photo?

Hi friends!

It's come to my attention that I have some people from around where I live reading my blog! So if that is you (you know who you are) then feel free to pipe-up if you want me to take your photo.
I'm happy to take photos of people free of charge and give them these photos, and I can use them for my portfolio, blog, etc.

You can send me an email on gracie.johns@gmail.com or just leave a comment here :)

On another note,

hello pretty flowers
